Everybody loves jokes. Especially when they are truly funny and provide a welcome respite from the daily seriousness and mundaneness that people have to live with all through their lives. That’s why comedians especially stand-up comedians are very popular because they have a terrific sense of humour and they crack jokes and say funny things that make people laugh. Many times the jokes end up being offensive and then some people who are hurt by these offensive jokes take objection. In today’s age when people have become extra sensitive and they can take legal action and turn public opinion against the person making offensive jokes, people have to be very careful about what they say. Still, some people are nonchalant and say what they want to assuming that everybody will find it funny. Famous comedian Dave Chappelle has been doing this for a while and even though he has faced criticism and even censure he has been quite flippant about it. Now he has said many things about the LGBTQ+ community in his latest comedy special program The Closer which premiered on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, on Netflix. He is facing a huge backlash for his comments right now.

Dave Chappelle is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer who has been working in TV, films, and on stage since 1988 and is very popular with his audience and fans. He is known for his fantastic sense of humour and his satirical comedy and he has appeared on many programs such as Def Comedy Jam, Chappelle’s Show, Buddies, Saturday Night Live, and many talk shows. He also has a successful film career appearing as a funny man in several films such as Robin Hood: Men in Tights, The Nutty Professor, Con Air, You’ve Got Mail, Blue Streak, Undercover Brother, and A Star is Born. He became a huge comedy star and in 2016 the entertainment industry was stunned when he signed a lucrative $20.0 million-per-release comedy-special deal with Netflix. Since then he has released several stand-up comedy specials on Netflix under this deal and both he and Netflix have achieved fame and commercial success. So what did Dave Chappelle say on The Closer that has angered the LGBTQ+ community so much and there is a backlash against him in the media? He made several sexually charged comments about the LGBTQ+ community especially the Trans community that they have found very offensive and demeaning. He has said things about their gender, their sexuality, their sexual organs, their bodies, and their way of thinking. He has also referred to his clashes with them in the past when he has said things that upset them but this time he seems to have made them angrier than ever before. These jokes and comments have immediately drawn criticism both online and in the media from many people who feel that Dave Chappelle has crossed the line and has insulted the LGBTQ+ community without provocation. Both Trans women and heterogeneous women have taken a strong stand against Chappelle’s comments and have criticized him saying that they are deeply disappointed with his behaviour.

Many of Chappelle’s Jokes Have Not Made People Laugh!

Dave Chappelle also made some jokes about the queer community that have not gone down well with them. Dave Chappelle has always been a bit unconcerned about the reactions people have had to many of his jokes but his reputation is so powerful that he has gotten away with it. He may get away with his comments and the hurt he has caused this time as well. Even though several media persons are trying to reach out to Chappelle for his comments about this latest controversy neither he nor any representatives from Netflix have responded. Cracking jokes is okay as long as everybody finds them funny and they have a good time. When a particular individual or community is targeted then things change immediately and the context of the humour becomes controversial. The LGBTQ+ community is particularly sensitive about its culture for obvious reasons and now that Dave Chappelle has raised their hackles things are going to be politically charged for a while. Till someone’s jokes piss off people once again!
