Going down on one’s knee or knees has meant different things at different times. Many men over the ages have gone down on one knee to propose to their beloved but sometimes the responses were not positive. In recent times athletes have gone down on one or two knees to show protest against social injustices most notably several black or African-American athletes. They have often gotten into trouble with the authorities for registering their protests and bringing unwelcome political attention to purely sporting events. When a president takes a knee one wonders what the occasion might be. So when news spread that President Joe Biden had recently taken a knee people were agog with curiosity and asking – Did Biden take a knee? When the answer was affirmative the next volley of questions included – Why did Biden take a knee and why did Joe Biden take a knee? After all, it’s not every day that one of the most famous and powerful men in the world takes a knee. So why exactly did Joe Biden forego standing for a while on Monday, August 23, 2021, in front of snapping cameras?

President Joe Biden did it for the ladies. That’s right! Joe Biden went down on a knee for some women right in the White House even as the shutterbugs went crazy. So who are these lucky ladies who got the president to buckle down from his usual standing position and take a knee? It was the 2020 WNBA champions Seattle Storm players and coaches who came to the White House on Monday for a ceremony held in their honour. The reason was that Seattle Storm won the WNBA championship in 2020 and it was their fourth victory in the league overall. Wait a minute! Who is Seattle Storm? Seattle Storm is an American professional basketball team based in Seattle, Washington, and rightfully owned by three dynamic and successful businesswomen. All their top players who were part of the 2020 championship-winning team were there and three of them namely Sue Bird, Jewell Lloyd, and Breanna Stewart presented Biden with a souvenir. Guess what? A souvenir Seattle Storm jersey with “Biden” and “46” on it.

Then came the much-awaited photo-op but there was one problem. The president was too tall! This is when Biden did the thing that is talked about since August 23 – he took a knee! So what exactly does it mean? It means Joe Biden kneeled and was still a tall sight as he is 6 feet tall. He did it so that the team members standing behind him would not have their view blocked even as he took a photo being among the team’s players and coaches. Biden was right there in front of all the other team members as the group got in close together to allow the photographers to take the pictures. Then came the Joe Biden speech where he celebrated the feats of Seattle Storm on both on and off the courts especially their social justice activism.

Making a Positive Difference to the World

Joe Biden said “What makes this team remarkable is they don’t just win games, they change lives: encouraging people to get vaccinated so we can beat this pandemic; speaking out and standing up for racial justice and voting rights; supporting education and… mentorship programs for young people; and fighting to protect trans youth from an epidemic of violence and discrimination. That’s what winners do. They shine the light and lift people up. They’re a force for change. That’s the Seattle Storm, that’s the WNBA. That’s what they do.” The heartening thing was that this was the first time since Barack Obama was in office that an NBA or WNBA team has been invited to pay a visit. What better than a women’s team to do the honours! When President Joe Biden took a knee there were quite a few laughs as it was quite a sight to see the usually straight and tall head of state hunker down in front of rows of tall women. The best part was that Biden did all this with a big smile on his face and it was a relief to see some informality in a venue that is almost always marked with formality. The thing that everybody will remember is that Joe Biden did it for the ladies!
