Many times when one is affected by a traumatic event in childhood it creates big psychological problems that manifest later and then trouble you for a long time and sometimes even for the rest of your life. It is a daily painful struggle to overcome these problems and they often cripple you and make it practically impossible to have a normal life. Elizabeth Vargas knows more about this than most other people because she has been through it for a major part of her life and even though the worst is over she is still traumatized by it. Though she had many problems they all ended up at one point – She became an alcoholic. That’s right! For Elizabeth Vargas alcohol became the way to escape from the pain of her problems and a refuge from the issues that troubled her. Alcohol became a kind of life support system for her for a long time and it became a talking point among her colleagues and those who knew her. Born on September 6, 1962, in Paterson, New Jersey, Elizabeth Vargas’ age is 58 years and she is an American journalist. Currently, she is the lead investigative reporter and documentary anchor for A&E Networks and also the host for the Fox TV program America’s Most Wanted. Her father Rafael “Ralf” Vargas was a colonel in the U.S. Army and hailed from Puerto Rico while her mother Anne Vargas was a part-time English teacher. Thanks to her father’s constantly moving job Vargas studied and lived in several places like Okinawa, Japan, and Germany, Belgium, and also the USA. While at the end of her high school Vargas realized that she had a passion for journalism and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. She chose to work in TV journalism and worked at several TV stations like KOMU-TV, KBIA, KTVN, KTVK-TV, WBBM-TV, NBC News, and ABC. She worked on many interesting issues like the veracity behind the church portraying Mary Magdalene as a prostitute which many people disagree with. She has won an Emmy Award for her work and has also been nominated for it several times.

All through these years, there was a darkness in Elizabeth’s soul that has its origins in the fact that her father had been a soldier in the U.S. Army. It began when she witnessed her father joining the Vietnam War when she was still a child and it filled her with anxiety. She started suffering daily panic attacks and turned to alcohol for strength and support. One glass became two and soon she was drinking by the bottle. In 2012 her alcoholism became so severe that she took treatment in a rehab clinic in Utah to sober up. Her struggles continued for several more years and she confessed to the media that she was an alcoholic. Vargas fought her addiction with determination and conviction and by the end of 2014 was completely free of her alcohol addiction. She became sober and now in 2021 people are asking – Is Elizabeth Vargas still sober? The answer is yes. Elizabeth Vargas is still sober as of August 2021 and intends to continue to do so.

People who know what happened to Elizabeth Vargas are curious to know what she is doing now. She is keeping busy working for A&E Networks and Fox and doing what she loves most – Talking and communicating about issues she cares about the most with viewers. She is now an anchor on the A&E’s FYI Network program News Café. In 2016 she published her book detailing her epic struggles with alcoholism and her subsequent recovery titled Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction that scored high on the USA Today and The New York Times bestseller lists. Childhood traumas are the most difficult to overcome and many times people get addicted to unwanted substances while trying to get away from the pain. It often destroys their lives and Elizabeth Vargas came close to destroying her own. However, her willpower and strength got her out of it and now Vargas is back leading a healthy, productive, and meaningful life. Elizabeth Vargas is not just a survivor but also an inspiration for both men and women.
