6 Movie Characters People Simply Love: These Interesting & Engaging Characters Make Audiences Come to Cinemas Again & Again!

The main reason people go to see the movies is that they want to experience interesting and exciting stories. Be it of any genre. Exciting stories happen because of exciting characters who bring these stories to life and make them larger than life. After the movie is over audiences trudge back to their homes thinking of these characters who may have made them laugh, cry, angry, emotional, happy, depressed, introspective, and even violent. That’s because the most effective characters have the power to move audiences in many ways as something about these characters resonates with the people who watch them. Hollywood is bulging at its edges with great characters who have been iconic, stood the test of time, and influenced people and society in myriad ways. The history of Hollywood is the total of the stories of fantastic characters whether they appeared in multiple films, a franchise, or were one-off films. Actors and actresses come and go but characters have a life of their own. They stay alive and kicking even decades later and become part of our psyche.

Here are some characters from the movies that we remember even today and probably will continue to do so –

1] Ethan Hunt

Ethan Hunt is one guy who is always fighting evil people and saving the good people from imminent disaster. While he is more of an American hero he is iconic and ever since Tom Cruise started playing this character in the first of the films in this long-running franchise Ethan Hunt has become a global phenomenon. Tom Cruise played Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible released in 1996 and in the five sequels that followed which have all made it big at the global box office. Ethan Hunt is an agent of the Impossible Missions Force [IMF] and uses all his skill, ingenuity, and tons of idealism to prevent villains from harming the good folks. With two more sequels Mission: Impossible 7 & 8 under production Ethan Hunt will be hunting down criminals for a while to come!

2] Catwoman

If a guy is fighting the bad people why should a woman be even a little behind? With Hollywood and audiences evolving with changing times more woman characters are gracing the screen than ever before and super-heroines too are getting their say in matters of importance. This is why the movie Catwoman was released with big fanfare in July 2004 and brought the mysterious crime-fighting damsel Catwoman to audiences all across America. After being murdered by corporate criminals a designer named Patience Phillips is revived by Egyptian cats and given superhuman cat-like abilities which enable her to fight tough bad guys. Catwoman is an attractive woman who won’t back down from doing the right thing no matter how dangerous the criminals are. Girls and women were pleased to have another female character in Hollywood movies that they could be proud of.

3] Axel Foley

Cops make great characters and few have made the tremendous impact that Axel Foley has done in the last 40 years of Hollywood history. Axel Foley made his debut in the smart action comedy thriller Beverly Hills Cop released in 1984 and quickly became one of the most loved and enjoyable characters of all time. The big reason was that Eddie Murphy played Axel Foley and brought this street-smart fast-talking Detroit cop to vivid life as no other actor could ever have. It made Eddie Murphy a superstar and the character of Axel Foley became a cultural phenomenon that got bigger with the release of the two sequels in 1987 and 1994 respectively. For everyone missing the non-stop entertainment that Axel Foley provided every time he appeared on the screen there is hope yet – In November 2019 Paramount Studios made a deal with Netflix to make a fourth film starring Axel Foley with an option for a sequel if things work out well. So Axel Foley, the most fun cop in the world, may soon say hello to all his movie-watching friends!

Even though the character of Pocahontas has appeared only twice on film, first in the 1995 animation classic titled Pocahontas and then later in the direct-to-video sequel Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World released in 1998, it has been very influential on popular culture. James Cameron’s technical breakthrough Avatar references the story of Pocahontas while the animation film Moana released in 2016 also draws inspiration from her character. Pocahontas is a Powhatan woman who had a romantic relationship with the English colonial settler John Smith when he first came to America in 1607. While Pocahontas is a Red Indian by origin she and Smith fall in love and understand each other even though they come from completely different worlds. When there is a bitter war between the English settlers and the Powhatan tribe Pocahontas saves John Smith from certain death and ends the fighting. Pocahontas is a legendary character and America learned a valuable history lesson with the release of this animated classic from Walt Disney Pictures in 1995.

Has there ever been a more earnest young man than Gaylord “Greg” Focker who was in love with his girlfriend and all he wanted was to get her parent’s approval and marry her? There hasn’t! Luckily he did get to marry her and even had children with her but his life struggles are what make many young men think at least 10 times before marrying a girl who has a father like Jack Byrnes. Ben Stiller played the helpless and hapless Gaylord Focker in the 2000 box-office smash Meet the Parents and later in the two successful sequels Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers. Gaylord Focker’s travails at the hands of his wife’s family especially his father-in-law Jack Byrnes played by veteran actor Robert De Niro have had the audiences rolling with laughter in the aisles right from the first film in this wildly successful franchise. Gaylord Focker is an unforgettable character in modern cinema and Ben Stiller brings his good nature and impossible innocence to life very vividly and with great empathy. It’s almost impossible not to like Gaylord Focker!

Phil Wenneck is the best friend you really shouldn’t have if you know what’s good for you in the long run! That’s what his friend Doug Billings found out at his bachelor party in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the hit film The Hangover released in 2009. Phil Wenneck is a sarcastic Elementary School teacher and the unofficial leader of the “Wolfpack,” a name given to themselves by a group of four close friends to elevate their mundane life to an exciting level. The bachelor party in Las Vegas turns chaotic with the bridegroom Doug missing on the morning of his wedding day and Phil with all his good intentions keeps making matters worse. Audiences loved the disaster causing Phil Wenneck so much that the makers of this film brought him and his gang back for two more outings The Hangover Part II in 2011 and The Hangover Part III in 2013. Hollywood star Bradley Cooper played Phil Wenneck with all his all-American charm and while he is now a leading actor his success has come in a big part due to the charisma he displayed almost effortlessly in the highly successful The Hangover movie franchise. When you meet the Phil Wenneck of your life you are well-advised to stay away from him if you know what’s good for you!
