Rachell “Rae” Hofstetter never sits still. She is always doing something and creating waves with her new ideas and concepts. She is better known to all her fans, admirers, and even haters by her online alias Valkyrae and she has been called the “Queen of YouTube” for a pretty good reason. She is now the most-watched female streamer on the YouTube platform in 2021 and there are a good two more months left in this year. Valkyrae is an American Internet personality and also the co-founder of the esports and apparel company 100 Thieves for which she has been creating content since 2018. The company regularly organizes competitions using video games which are very popular with gaming fanatics and she has built the brand steadily since the last three years. Though Valkyrae’s reputation and popularity primarily rest on her gaming skills and ventures she has created other businesses as well. Valkyrae announced the launch of her new skincare product that she has branded RFLCT on October 19, 2021, and suddenly she was hit by a ton of bricks. People have learned about this backlash against her and are asking – What happened to Valkyrae?

Valkyrae’s new brand RFLCT is meant most for gamers who spend a lot of time in front of screens and are very susceptible to its negative side effects. Valkyrae’s company has claimed that due to prolonged exposure to the screens’ blue light these gamers are susceptible to serious skin damage and that RFLCT products prevent this damage. RFLCT has received a huge backlash from many quarters who are accusing the company of making these claims without sufficient evidence to back them. Not just industry observers but competitors and university academics are also making public statements that RLFCT is making unsubstantiated claims and misleading the consumers. This whole incident which has been snowballing since October 21, 2021, has been dubbed the “Valkyrae Controversy” and it has forced Valkyrae to address people’s concerns immediately. While Valkyrae has made it clear that she stands behind her RFLCT skin care products and is vouching for their authenticity she also knows what bad press and negative publicity can do to her fledgling brand.

The success of Valkyrae’s skincare products is critical to her business plans and she has immediately stepped into damage control. Valkyrae posted an audio recording on the Internet in which she said that she was confused with the situation that had developed and that her company would update their product website with further information to address this controversial issue. She has taken a break from streaming and even removed the “100 Thieves Co-Owner” tag from her Twitter bio to delink her company from this negative publicity. Valkyrae has said that she chose to launch an anti-blue light skincare product line after studying a whole gamut of brand partnerships that her agent gave information on. She admitted that all the studies for RLFCT Project were conducted in-house but for copyright reasons her company did not publish the studies and that’s why the public does not know the details.

The Valkyrae drama heightened when political commentator HasanAbi said uncharitable things about the RFLCT skincare product line and called it “just f**king soap” which has made Valkyrae furious. He compared the LFLCT controversy to an earlier controversy regarding a product line called G Fuel. Valkyrae has said that this comparison is unfair and unwarranted because her products are safe while the G Fuel product line contained lead. HasanAbi’s fans and supporters are vocal that Valkyrae is over-reacting and all that HasanAbi is trying to point out is that people are being hypocritical regarding the RFLCT controversy. The G Fuel products were very harmful while Valkyrae’s products are not but people are more outraged by the latter which is very unreasonable. As of now Valkyrae is standing by her RFLCT product line and assuring consumers and the public through social media that her products have met the required quality standards and perform as advertised. Still given the sensitive nature of consumers today and the strict guidelines of what manufacturers can claim about their products it sure looks like the Valkyrae controversy will take some time to abate. A marketplace is a brutal place and everybody is at war!
