Back in the 1980s, Phoebe Cates was the “It” girl. While she only did a few movies she made such a terrific impact on filmgoers, co-stars, and the film industry that she became a kind of phenomenon. Later when she quit acting for a long time people still remembered her and hoped that she would come back. After her bikini scene in the cult comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High she became a teen sex symbol who kept an entire generation of teenagers and young men awake well past midnight fantasizing about her. The Phoebe Cates of the 80s was a cultural icon that people remember even today even as nostalgia for that decade is growing by the hour.

People were blown away by her after watching the clutch of movies that she then appeared in like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gremlins, Bright Lights Big City, Private School, and Shag. She appeared in some movies even in the 1990s such as Drop Dead Fred, Bodies Rest & Motion, and Princess Caraboo. Paradise was a 1982 Canadian adventure movie starring a young Phoebe Cates and Willie Aames and was dismissed at that time for being a pale imitation of the more famous The Blue Lagoon. It had tons of nudity and sexuality and was a rage on the teen and young viewer’s circuit. This led to Cates being seen as a young woman who was not afraid to show her body if the role demanded it.

What happened then after Cates did these movies in the 1980s? Kevin Kline happened! Cates met actor Kevin Kline in 1983 when she went for an audition for the movie The Big Chill. Even though they were both dating other people at that time they started seeing each other after two years. Cates married Kline in 1989 and changed her name to Phoebe Cates Kline. She gave birth to their two children named Owen Joseph Kline and Greta Simone Kline and stopped acting. After raising her children for a while she began a career as a boutique store owner. In 2005 Cates opened her boutique named Blue Tree on Madison Avenue in New York City. She has been running it since then and doing a pretty good job too.

Even though filmmakers tried to lure her back to Hollywood many times Cates refused to come back and focused on being a wife and mother. It was only in 2001 that her old friend and co-star Jennifer Jason Leigh managed to coax her into acting in a comedy-drama titled The Anniversary Party that Leigh herself co-wrote and co-directed. People saw the movie to see how Cates looked now and came away impressed. The “It” girl was a bit older now but she still looked good. Marriage and motherhood had not taken away the ravishing good looks and the star appeal of Phoebe Cates.
